A message from the vicarage...
A view from the Vicarage- September 08
Dear Friends,
I watched a group of people absorbed in a ‘Sudoku’ number puzzle a little while ago. Another onlooker said bluntly ‘I can’t see the point in it!’
Far more seriously, there has been a recent spate of teenage deaths in South Wales, where it seems that young people have not been able to ‘see the point’ in living longer and have killed themselves.
Many people with apparently successful lives, work, families and talents can have times when they don’t see the point in all they have worked for.
Easter gives us a message of purpose instead of pointlessness.
In the years of Jesus’ work in Palestine, many people, even if they didn’t understand what it was all about, had a sense of Jesus giving purpose. For some, it was about being accepted for who they were, listened to and understood and loved.
For others, there was a sense of something to get involved in – passing on that loving acceptance; for many, there was a belief that they could be valuable even if they had failed.
As Jesus died, no doubt it all seemed to have been a pointless waste. Yet if Jesus did come back from death, then anything is possible. Resurrection can be found in all sorts of ways. Difficult circumstances, complex problems, hard relationships- all can be in with a chance of renewal. Instead of being pointless, they can be part of a life with purpose to it.
May God’s new life and purpose be your gift this Easter.
Your friend and Vicar,
Hilary Edgerton
